The Dark tussock moth (Dicallomera fascelina) belongs to the family Erebidae. This species is native to temperate regions across Eurasia and is considered a significant defoliator in both natural forests and managed plantations. While not always a primary pest, its localized outbreaks can lead to substantial ecological and economic impacts.
The host range of this moth is quite broad, primarily involving deciduous trees such as birch, willow, oak, and lime. In some ecological contexts, larvae have also been observed feeding on conifers, including pine and spruce. This polyphagous nature allows the pest to thrive in various habitats, including forest edges and urban landscape plantings.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the early stages, often protected by silk cocoons or bark crevices. Young larvae typically skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the main veins. Persistent defoliation causes premature leaf drop, reduces tree vigor, and renders the plants more susceptible to secondary pathogens and climate stress.
Management strategies focus on minimizing damage during peak population years. Cultural methods include maintaining healthy stands to improve natural resistance. Biological control, such as the application of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), is often the preferred method for managing young larvae. Chemical insecticides may be employed in high-value nurseries or urban settings when monitoring indicates a severe infestation risk.
