Description

Dichomeris eridantis is a moth belonging to the family Gelechiidae (twirler moths) in the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized in agricultural entomology as a harmful organism that impacts specific legume crops, primarily within its endemic or introduced ranges.

The primary host for this pest is chickpea (Cicer arietinum). As an oligophagous species, the larvae exhibit a strong preference for leguminous tissues, which can lead to significant economic losses for farmers specialized in pulse production if the pest infestation remains uncontrolled.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The life cycle duration is highly dependent on ambient temperature and host plant quality. During the larval stage, the insects undergo several molts, feeding voraciously and causing the majority of damage to the host plant before pupating.

Regarding its harmful impact, the larvae are known to feed on both vegetative and reproductive structures. They often web leaves together, creating a protected shelter while consuming the leaf lamina. This defoliation reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize and can result in flower abortion or damaged pods, severely impacting the final yield quantity and quality.
