Description

The Juniper webworm (Dichomeris marginella) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Gelechiidae within the order Lepidoptera. This small moth is known for its tendency to infest various species of juniper, causing significant damage to both landscape plantings and ornamental shrubs in garden environments.

The primary hosts for this pest include the common juniper (Juniperus communis) and its numerous cultivars. Because the larvae remain protected within webs, the infestation often goes unnoticed until the damage to the foliage becomes severe and visually obvious to the gardener.

The biological cycle typically consists of one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in early stages within webs constructed between the needles. Once spring temperatures rise, the caterpillars emerge from their shelters to resume feeding on the fresh needles, eventually reaching the pupal stage in early summer.

The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which mine the interior of the needles, causing them to turn yellow or brown. A distinctive sign of infestation is the presence of silk webbing that binds the needles together. Heavy infestations can lead to massive defoliation, stunted growth, and the dieback of entire branches.

Effective control measures require a proactive approach. Mechanical removal of infested branch tips is recommended for small garden areas. For larger populations, chemical control using systemic insecticides is highly effective, especially when applied early in the spring when the larvae are most active and vulnerable to contact.
