Dichromothrips

Dichromothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These specialized pests are commonly found in greenhouses, conservatories, and private plant collections, where they pose a significant threat to delicate ornamental species.

The primary hosts for this pest include members of the Orchidaceae family. Dichromothrips specifically target various orchid genera, feeding on both vegetative and reproductive parts, which can lead to severe aesthetic damage and loss of plant vigor.

The life cycle of Dichromothrips consists of several stages: egg, two larval instars, propupa, pupa, and adult. The development rate is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations per year in controlled environments. Larvae and adults often hide in tight spaces, such as inside emerging buds or leaf sheaths, protecting them from environmental factors.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by silvering, scarring, and deformation of flowers and leaves. By piercing the plant cells and sucking out the sap, the thrips cause necrotic spots and chlorosis. Heavy infestations frequently result in bud blasting, where flowers fail to open properly or are severely distorted.
