Description

Dicladispa, most notably represented by the species Dicladispa armigera, is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to rice production, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.

The primary host for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the beetle can also infest various other graminaceous crops and wild grasses, such as maize and millet. These alternative hosts play a critical role in maintaining the pest population during periods when rice crops are not available.

The biology of this pest involves a complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. Once the larvae emerge, they feed within the leaf blades, creating characteristic mines. Both larvae and adults cause damage, though the larval stage is often responsible for the most severe physiological stress on the plant.

The damage caused by Dicladispa is distinct: as the larvae mine the leaves, the foliage turns white or brown and eventually dries out. Heavy infestations significantly reduce the plant's ability to photosynthesize, resulting in stunted growth, reduced tillering, and substantial yield losses if not managed effectively.
