Description
Systematic position: The rice hispa (Dicladispa armigera) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting rice cultivation, particularly in South and Southeast Asia.
Host plants: The primary host plant is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the pest has also been observed feeding on other Poaceae family members, such as maize, barley, and various wild grasses that serve as alternative food sources when the rice crop is not available.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in dried stubble or among debris near fields. As temperatures rise, they emerge to feed on young rice shoots. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, larvae start mining into the leaves, creating tunnels. The total life cycle is relatively short, allowing for multiple generations during the rice-growing season.
Damage and economic impact: The larvae are leaf miners, feeding on the green tissues inside the leaves and creating distinct white or translucent streaks. Adult beetles feed on the epidermis, creating parallel white lines. Severe infestations cause leaf desiccation, stunted plant growth, and significant yield losses, as the photosynthetic capacity of the plants is severely reduced.
Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling rice hispa. Recommended measures include:
- Removal and burning of stubble after harvest to eliminate overwintering sites.
- Using resistant or tolerant rice varieties where available.
- Regular field monitoring to detect early signs of infestation.
- Application of selective insecticides if the economic threshold is exceeded.
- Maintaining proper water management and balanced fertilizer application to improve crop resilience.
