Dicyrtomina

Dicyrtomina is a genus of springtails (Collembola) belonging to the family Dicyrtomidae. These tiny hexapods are primitive soil-dwelling organisms that, under specific environmental conditions, can shift their diet to feed on the above-ground parts of various agricultural and ornamental crops, acting as occasional plant pests.

The pest targets a wide range of flora, preferring humid and shaded microclimates. It is frequently observed causing damage to vegetable seedlings, lettuce crops, greenhouse flowers, and various indoor plants. When humidity levels are persistently high, the population density of Dicyrtomina can rise rapidly, posing a significant threat to young and tender plant tissues.

The biological development of Dicyrtomina is intrinsically linked to substrate moisture. Their life cycle involves several molts, with adults remaining capable of reproduction throughout their entire lifespan. They possess a specialized jumping mechanism known as the furcula, which makes manual detection difficult, as the insects immediately leap away upon the slightest physical disturbance of the plant.

The typical damage caused by this pest appears as minute superficial pits, small holes, or tissue scraping on leaves and cotyledons. Heavy infestations lead to stunted growth, distortion of leaf structure, and a significant reduction in the marketability of the produce. Adult specimens pose a particularly severe risk to newly emerged seedlings, which can be entirely destroyed under high population pressures.

For effective control of Dicyrtomina, it is essential to implement strict agrotechnical management: maintaining optimal humidity, providing regular greenhouse ventilation, and preventing water stagnation. In cases of high infestation, contact or systemic insecticides approved for the specific crop should be employed. Furthermore, the use of yellow or blue sticky traps and soil mulching serves as a practical barrier to prevent the movement and colonization of the pest.
