Southern ground pearl

The southern ground pearl (Dimargarodes meridionalis) is a specialized soil-dwelling insect belonging to the family Margarodidae. Unlike many other scale insects that inhabit aerial parts of plants, this species spends most of its life cycle underground, feeding exclusively on the root systems of host plants.

The primary hosts of this pest include grapevines, although it has also been documented on various grasses and other perennial plants grown in sandy or well-drained soils. Because the insect remains hidden beneath the surface, infestations are often detected only after the plants show significant physiological decline, making management a complex challenge for agronomists.

The biology of Dimargarodes meridionalis is characterized by a unique developmental stage known as the cyst. Once the mobile nymphs locate a suitable root, they insert their mouthparts and begin to feed, subsequently secreting a hard, spherical, pearl-like shell that protects them from external environmental stressors and chemical treatments.

Damage occurs due to the depletion of plant reserves by the feeding nymphs and adults. Typical symptoms in vineyards include reduced vine vigor, chlorosis, stunted shoot growth, and a significant decrease in berry production. In severe cases, the cumulative damage to the root system causes the vine to lose its ability to uptake water and nutrients, resulting in total plant death.
