Laing's pearl scale (Eumargarodes laingi) is a specialized soil-dwelling pest belonging to the Margarodidae family. These insects spend the majority of their lifecycle underground, attached to the root systems of host plants, where they feed on xylem and phloem sap, causing significant stress to the host vegetation.

The primary economic hosts for this pest include sugarcane and various grass species. Because they thrive deep within the soil profile, they often go unnoticed until the host plant shows severe signs of decline, such as yellowing, stunted growth, or wilting, making them a challenging target for agricultural management.

The biology of this species is notable for its cyst-forming capability, which protects the insect during dormant periods. Adult females resemble small pearls due to their waxy secretion, a feature that provides significant protection against external environmental factors and many traditional chemical treatments, complicating eradication efforts.
