Description
Systematic position: The bamboo borer (genus Dinoderus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae. These insects are recognized as serious pests of stored products and dry plant materials, specializing in starch and cellulose consumption.
Crops and materials damaged: Their primary food sources include various grain products like corn, wheat, rice, and sorghum. Additionally, they are notorious for infesting dry wood, specifically bamboo, cane, and rattan products, often causing structural damage to items stored in warehouses.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is highly influenced by ambient temperature and humidity levels. Females deposit eggs into crevices of grain or wood surfaces. Larvae emerge and bore deep into the substrate, feeding on the interior tissues. Under optimal conditions, the transition from egg to adult can take approximately 3 to 6 weeks.
