Diphaulaca

Diphaulaca is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Chrysomelidae, specifically the subfamily Alticini, commonly known as flea beetles. These insects are recognized for their specialized jumping ability, provided by enlarged hind femora, which allows them to escape threats quickly and distribute effectively across crop fields.

Taxonomically, this genus falls under the order Coleoptera. From an agronomic perspective, these beetles represent a significant threat to various vegetable and ornamental plants. Their entire life cycle is closely linked to their host plants, where they complete their development stages from egg to adult within the plant tissue or the surrounding soil environment.

The pest primarily targets crops within the Solanaceae family and other broad-leaved plants. The adults feed aggressively on foliage, chewing small, uniform holes through the leaf lamina, creating a characteristic "shot-hole" appearance. High populations can cause severe skeletonization of leaves, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and stunted plant growth.

The biology of Diphaulaca typically involves overwintering as adults in the soil or under crop debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed on tender new growth. Larvae often develop within the leaf tissue or in the rhizosphere, making early detection difficult and complicating pest management efforts during the early growing season.

Effective crop protection requires an integrated approach. Cultural methods are fundamental, including crop rotation, the elimination of alternative host weeds, and deep autumn tillage to disrupt overwintering sites. During outbreaks, the application of systemic or contact-action insecticides registered for agricultural use is recommended to suppress beetle populations.
