Description

Diplogaster is a genus of nematodes traditionally considered in agronomy as a group closely associated with organic decomposition processes. Systematically, they belong to the order Rhabditida, family Diplogastridae. It is important to understand that many species of this genus are saprophages, yet under certain conditions, they may demonstrate an associative connection with infected plant tissues.

These nematodes are most often found in decaying plant residues, compost piles, and soils with high organic matter content. Although they are not always primary parasites, their presence in the root zone often accompanies the development of bacterial and fungal rots, making them indicators of poor plant health.

The biology of Diplogaster is characterized by a very rapid life cycle. Under optimal conditions, such as high humidity and the presence of decaying substrates, they can complete their life cycle from egg to sexually mature adult within a few days. This allows them to rapidly colonize damaged tissues, feeding on bacteria and cell decay products.

The nature of the damage associated with these organisms is most often secondary. They inhabit tissues already weakened by pathogens, accelerating the destruction of the root system or fruits. The harmfulness is manifested by a decline in the general health of plants, stunted growth, reduced commercial quality of vegetable crops, and shortened shelf life of the harvested yield.

Protection measures are based on agrotechnical practices.

  • Implementation of crop rotation.
  • Regular removal and disposal of decaying plant residues.
  • Maintaining optimal soil moisture levels to prevent rotting processes.
  • Using certified healthy planting material and ensuring proper soil aeration.
