Pristionchus lheritieri
Pristionchus lheritieri
Description
Taxonomic position. Pristionchus lheritieri is a soil nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Diplogastridae. Unlike strictly parasitic species, this nematode exhibits facultative parasitism, meaning it can transition between feeding on decaying organic matter and invading living plant tissues under favorable environmental conditions.
Target crops and nature of damage. This species is commonly associated with vegetable crops, potatoes, and various ornamental plants. Damage is typically secondary to pre-existing stressors, as the nematodes often carry phytopathogenic bacteria into the plant, which accelerates tissue decay and significantly undermines the overall health of the agricultural product.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves several larval molts and an adult stage. A unique biological feature of P. lheritieri is the production of dauer larvae—an environmentally resistant stage. These larvae are highly specialized for dispersal, frequently hitchhiking on beetles or other arthropods to migrate to new, nutrient-rich environments or host plants.
Economic importance. The economic impact is linked to root system deterioration and the subsequent loss of vigor in crops. Plants infested by this nematode often show signs of chlorosis, stunted growth, and premature wilting. The primary damage is not just direct feeding but the facilitation of secondary infections that can result in total harvest failure if left unmanaged.
Control measures. Effective management of this nematode requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Regular crop rotation to break the life cycle of the pest.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal of infested crop debris.
- Maintaining optimal soil health and drainage to reduce organic decay favorable for nematode proliferation.
- Utilization of biological control agents, such as nematode-trapping fungi or antagonistic bacteria.
