Description

Systematic position: Disonycha glabrata belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Commonly known as a type of flea beetle, this insect is recognized by its small size, dark coloration, and, characteristic of the subfamily Alticinae, enlarged hind femurs that allow for rapid jumping to escape predators.

Target crops: The primary hosts of this beetle are plants within the Amaranthaceae family. It is particularly notorious for damaging various species of Amaranthus, including common pigweed and cultivated amaranth varieties, posing a risk to both commercial agricultural fields and garden crops.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in soil debris or protected areas. Once spring temperatures rise, they emerge to feed and mate. Females lay clusters of eggs, usually near the host plant. Larvae hatch and feed on foliage, eventually pupating in the soil, which completes the development cycle before the emergence of the next generation.

Nature of damage: Both the adult beetles and the larvae contribute to foliage destruction. Adults create characteristic "shothole" damage, resulting in numerous small holes across the leaves.
