Description

The Triangular flea beetle (Disonycha triangularis) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized by the distinct triangular marking on its pronotum, a feature that distinguishes it from other common flea beetles found in agricultural environments.

This pest primarily attacks plants within the Amaranthaceae family, with sugar beets and common beets being its preferred hosts. It also maintains populations on various weeds, such as lamb's quarters, which serve as alternative food sources and allow the beetle to survive when preferred crops are not available.

The life cycle of the beetle consists of complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under surface debris, emerging in the spring to feed on emerging seedlings. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants, and the resulting larvae feed primarily on the roots, causing hidden damage before they pupate and emerge as adults.

Damage caused by the triangular flea beetle is characterized by "shot-hole" patterns on the leaves, where adults chew through the leaf tissue. Intense feeding pressure can lead to the total skeletonization of leaves, stunted plant growth, and significant reductions in root size and sugar content in beets, negatively impacting the total harvest yield.
