Diversibipalium

Diversibipalium is a genus of land planarians belonging to the order Tricladida and the family Geoplanidae. These organisms are highly predatory terrestrial flatworms that have gained significant attention due to their invasive nature. They are often transported across international borders through the nursery trade, hiding in potting soil and nursery containers.

The primary agricultural impact of Diversibipalium is the disruption of the soil food web. As aggressive predators, they feed almost exclusively on earthworms, which are essential for maintaining soil structure, fertility, and nutrient cycling. A heavy infestation can lead to a drastic decline in the earthworm population, resulting in compacted soil and reduced plant vitality over time.

The biology of Diversibipalium is characterized by their unique ability for asexual reproduction via fragmentation. When the tail end of the worm adheres to a surface, it can separate and regenerate into an entirely new individual. This makes them remarkably difficult to eradicate once they become established in a greenhouse or garden environment, as they can quickly recover from disturbance.

Identification is usually based on their distinct morphology, featuring a flattened, elongated body with a characteristic semi-lunate or hammer-shaped head. They move by gliding on a slime track and use a pharynx to secrete digestive enzymes that liquefy their prey externally before ingestion. Their presence is often detected only by the noticeable absence of earthworms in otherwise healthy soil.

Effective control measures for Diversibipalium are limited as there are no systemic pesticides currently labeled for their elimination. Integrated pest management focuses on exclusion and sanitation:

• Strict quarantine of new plant material and soil substrates.
• Manual removal and destruction of sighted specimens.
• Minimizing excessive moisture and leaf litter in greenhouses.
• Monitoring vulnerable areas during humid conditions when activity peaks.
