Systematic position: Diversibipalium multilineatum belongs to the phylum Platyhelminthes (flatworms), class Turbellaria, order Tricladida, and family Geoplanidae. This species is a large, predatory, and invasive flatworm that has gained attention globally due to its potential to disrupt local soil ecosystems after being accidentally introduced via horticultural trade.

Biology and life cycle: These worms are hermaphrodites capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction through fragmentation. They are nocturnal hunters, preferring cool, humid environments. During the day, they remain hidden in moist soil, under rocks, or beneath organic mulch, as they are highly susceptible to desiccation when exposed to direct sunlight or dry air.

Nature of damage and pest status: They do not feed on plant tissues, which means they are not direct herbivores. However, they are highly effective predators of earthworms and other beneficial soil macrofauna. By decimating earthworm populations, they indirectly damage plant growth by altering soil structure, reducing aeration, and hindering nutrient cycling processes within the garden beds.

Affected crops: While they do not target specific plant species, their impact is most significant in greenhouse environments, plant nurseries, and botanical gardens where high humidity and soil moisture are maintained. Any crop relying on a healthy soil microbiome is susceptible to the degradation caused by the decline of essential soil organisms like earthworms.

Control measures: There are currently no widely available chemical insecticides targeting this species without harming the soil environment. Management relies on integrated practices:

• Strict phytosanitary inspection of imported soil and nursery pots.
• Manual removal and destruction of sighted individuals at night.
• Reducing humidity in non-essential areas to create unfavorable conditions.
• Quarantine protocols for any new plant material introduced into a clean nursery or garden.
