The wheat sawfly (Dolerus ephippiatus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is recognized as a specific pest of cereal crops, causing damage to various grain species across its geographical range, particularly in European and Asian agricultural regions.
The primary hosts of this pest include wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Both winter and spring varieties of these cereals are susceptible to infestation. The larvae, often referred to as false caterpillars, cause economic damage by feeding on the vegetative tissues of the host plants, which significantly impairs the growth and yield of the crops.
