Barley sawfly

The barley sawfly (lat. Dolerus hordei) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to cereal production in various regions, specifically targeting cultivated grains by feeding on their foliage during the vegetative stage.

The primary host crops for this pest include barley, wheat, and rye. While adult sawflies are generally harmless, their larvae, known as false caterpillars, are responsible for the damage. They possess chewing mouthparts that allow them to consume large portions of leaf tissue, which can severely compromise the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis.

The biological cycle of Dolerus hordei typically consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the soil as a pre-pupa, residing several centimeters below the surface. As temperatures rise in spring, the insects pupate and emerge as adults. Mating occurs shortly after emergence, and females use their ovipositor to deposit eggs inside the plant tissues.

Damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the consumption of leaf blades, often resulting in jagged or complete stripping of the foliage. In cases of high population density, the resulting damage can significantly weaken the plant, lead to stunted growth, and cause measurable losses in final grain yield and quality.

Effective management strategies against the barley sawfly focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

• Deep plowing or mechanical tillage of fields after harvest to disrupt overwintering sites in the soil.
• Strict adherence to crop rotation to prevent the buildup of pest populations in consecutive seasons.
• Monitoring of larval activity during the spring to determine the need for chemical intervention.
• Application of approved insecticides only when economic threshold levels are reached to preserve beneficial insect populations.
