Leaf beetle
Donacia
Description
The Donacia, commonly known as the reed beetle or leaf beetle, belongs to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. These insects are distinguished by their brilliant, metallic coloration and their specialized adaptation to aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats. They are significant pests in ecosystems where rice or similar hydrophilic crops are cultivated.
These beetles primarily target aquatic plants and wetland grasses. In agricultural settings, they are known to infest rice paddies, causing substantial damage to the leaves and occasionally the root systems of the plants. Their presence is often linked to the abundance of aquatic vegetation surrounding irrigation channels and low-lying fields.
The biological cycle of Donacia is uniquely tied to water. The larvae are aquatic and possess specialized structures to extract oxygen from the roots and stems of host plants. After developing under the water surface, they pupate in silk cocoons attached to the plant roots. This specialized life history makes them highly resilient to environmental changes and difficult to detect during the early stages of development.
The damage caused by adults involves feeding on the leaf epidermis, resulting in longitudinal scarring and weakened plant structures. The larvae damage the root system, which significantly impairs the nutrient uptake and overall vitality of the crop. Severe infestations can lead to stunted growth, reduced tillering in rice, and ultimately lower yields.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling Donacia. Key tactics include the removal of host weeds from irrigation ditches, water level management in the paddies, and regular field scouting. If threshold levels are exceeded, the use of insecticides approved for aquatic environments is recommended, ensuring that the applications target specific periods when adults are most active.
