Description
The rice leaf beetle (Donacia provosti) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is recognized as a specialized pest that significantly impacts aquatic rice-growing ecosystems, causing economic losses in major agricultural regions.
The primary host plant is rice (Oryza sativa). Both adult beetles and their larvae infest the crop, causing damage to leaf tissues and stems. The presence of these pests reduces the vigor of the plant, hindering its ability to develop healthy panicles and grains during the critical growth phases.
The biological cycle of this pest is highly specialized to flooded environments. Eggs are laid near the roots underwater, and the larvae develop in the submerged parts of the rice plants. This aquatic stage makes it particularly difficult to monitor and control the pest population using standard methods.
Damage assessment shows that the feeding activity leads to skeletonized leaves and weakened root systems, which significantly stresses the crop. In cases of heavy infestation, the yield reduction can be substantial, often resulting in stunted plant growth and poor grain filling.
