Hook-tip moths (genus Drepana) are a group of moths belonging to the family Drepanidae. These insects are characterized by their falcate (hooked) wing tips, which give them a unique appearance resembling a dried leaf when at rest. As agricultural and forestry pests, they are primarily associated with specific deciduous trees, affecting the aesthetic and physiological health of plants.

Taxonomically, they are classified under the order Lepidoptera. Their biology is adapted to forest environments, where they act as primary consumers. While they rarely cause tree mortality, their defoliating habits can significantly stress young plantations or nursery stock during periods of high population density.

The larvae of the genus Drepana are host-specific, preferring members of the Betulaceae family, particularly birch (Betula) and alder (Alnus). The damage is manifested through the consumption of leaves, often starting from the margins or creating holes in the leaf blades. This activity reduces the overall vigor of the host plant.

The life cycle of the hook-tip moth consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Most species overwinter in the pupal stage, encased in a silken cocoon spun between leaves or in crevices of the bark. Adults emerge in spring or summer, and their flight periods vary depending on local climate conditions and available thermal resources.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Scouting for larval activity during the spring is crucial for timely application of controls. Biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, are highly effective against young caterpillars while remaining environmentally friendly. Chemical control is generally reserved for severe outbreaks in high-value ornamental trees.
