Description

Systematic position. The mollusk Drymaeus interpunctus belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and the family Bulimulidae. It is a terrestrial pulmonate snail primarily found in tropical climates. The species is characterized by its elongated shell with a distinct spotted or dotted pattern, which identifies it as a significant phytophagous mollusk in specific ecological niches.

Crops affected. This pest acts as a polyphage, impacting a wide variety of plants. It is particularly damaging to ornamental plants, flower nurseries, young fruit tree seedlings, and various greenhouse vegetable crops. Because these snails require moist environments to thrive, they frequently target crops in nurseries or gardens with dense canopy cover, causing substantial economic loss in high-humidity cultivation areas.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Drymaeus interpunctus is highly dependent on humidity levels. As hermaphrodites, they exhibit high reproductive potential under suitable environmental conditions, laying egg clutches in damp soil or decaying leaf litter. After hatching, the juvenile snails feed voraciously, growing rapidly during the primary vegetation season, which facilitates a quick expansion of the local population if left unchecked.

Damage and economic impact. The snail causes mechanical damage to plants by using its radula to scrape away leaf tissues, stems, and flower buds. This feeding behavior results in ragged leaf margins, holes, and systemic damage to the plant's vascular system. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can lead to the stunting of plants, significant reduction in marketability of ornamentals, and susceptibility to secondary infections.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mollusk:

  • Cultural control by reducing soil moisture and removing debris where snails find shelter.
  • Installation of copper barriers or grit-based deterrents around vulnerable plants.
  • Application of specialized molluscicides, such as iron phosphate baits, which are safer for the environment.
  • Systematic manual collection during evening or morning hours to physically lower the population density.
