Ectropis

Ectropis is a genus of moths belonging to the family Geometridae. These insects are widely recognized in agricultural entomology due to the destructive nature of their larvae, often referred to as inchworms or loopers. Among the various species, Ectropis obliqua is particularly notorious for causing extensive damage to tea crops across several regions, making it a primary target for pest management programs.

Systematically, Ectropis is classified under the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae. The adult moths are generally nocturnal, resting on tree trunks or foliage during the daylight hours. Their larvae possess a distinctive locomotion method, utilizing thoracic and prolegs to create a looping motion, which allows them to mimic the appearance of small twigs on host plants.

The primary hosts for Ectropis include tea bushes (Camellia sinensis), although they can also infest various woody perennials. The larvae feed aggressively on leaves, beginning with young, succulent foliage before moving to mature leaves. Severe infestations can result in total defoliation of the bushes, leading to significant physiological stress, reduced plant vigor, and substantial losses in the quality and quantity of the harvest.

The biological life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in small clusters on the underside of leaves or within crevices in the bark. After hatching, the larvae undergo several instars of growth. Once their development is complete, they descend to the soil for pupation. The number of generations per year is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and regional climate patterns.
