Footman moths

Eilema is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae, commonly referred to as "footman moths". While their primary food source is lichen and algae found on tree bark, these insects can occasionally transition to feeding on buds and young shoots of various ornamental and fruit-bearing trees, classifying them as minor garden pests in specific ecological conditions.

The damage caused by Eilema larvae is often observed in neglected orchards or plantations where moss and lichen growth on trunks is excessive. These larvae predominantly target fruit trees, including apple, pear, and plum, especially during the early spring when alternative food sources are scarce or the larvae have emerged from overwintering sites.

The biological cycle of these moths follows a standard lepidopteran pattern: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Overwintering occurs during the larval stage, tucked deep within bark crevices or protected spots. As temperatures rise, the caterpillars commence feeding, making the period of bud burst the most critical time for monitoring potential crop loss.

Feeding patterns typically involve grazing on the bark surface, but in higher population densities, larvae may consume emerging buds, leading to stunted shoot development or the loss of flower buds. The direct harm to the tree's health is usually limited unless the tree is already stressed by drought, poor nutrition, or other pre-existing phytosanitary problems.

Management strategies focus on habitat modification and chemical intervention. Recommended practices include:

• Mechanical bark scrubbing to remove lichen and moss growth.
• Applying lime wash to trunks to deter egg-laying and shelter for larvae.
• Maintaining healthy tree vigor through proper fertilization and pruning.
• Using contact insecticides or microbial pesticides if larval populations exceed economic thresholds.
