Copper-colored ground beetle

Systematic position and identification. Elaphrus cupreus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. Commonly known as the copper-colored ground beetle, it is easily identified by its metallic, bronze-copper sheen and the distinct punctured appearance of its elytra. These beetles are generally medium-sized and are well-adapted to environments with high humidity.

Biology and life cycle. The species thrives in damp soil conditions, often found near field edges, wetlands, or irrigation ditches. They overwinter as adults, emerging in early spring as temperatures rise. The larvae, like the adults, live in the topsoil and are predatory in nature, though they may incidentally feed on plant tissues when high densities occur or environmental conditions force a dietary shift.

Nature of damage. While generally considered beneficial predators of smaller insects, Elaphrus cupreus can become a secondary pest in agricultural settings. During mass outbreaks, they feed on young seedlings, particularly at the ground level. This feeding causes necrotic lesions on stems, leading to stunted growth, wilting, or even the death of the emerging crop stand.

Affected crops. The most susceptible crops include early-stage cereals (wheat, barley), sugar beet, and various horticultural vegetables. Young seedlings are the most vulnerable as they possess soft tissues that are easily penetrated by the beetle’s mouthparts. Fields with poor drainage or those located in low-lying areas are at a higher risk of infestation.

Protection and management measures. Strategic pest management is key to minimizing damage from this ground beetle:

• Maintaining field sanitation by removing weeds that provide shelter during overwintering.
• Utilizing tillage practices to disturb the soil surface, which interferes with the larval development cycle.
• Applying systemic seed treatments to provide initial protection for seedlings against soil-dwelling pests.
• Regular field scouting during the germination phase to assess population levels near moisture-rich areas.
