Rusty shield bug

Elasmucha ferrugata

Description

Systematic position: The Rusty shield bug (lat. Elasmucha ferrugata) is a member of the Hemiptera order and belongs to the Acanthosomatidae family. This insect is primarily recognized by its reddish-brown coloration and its habit of living on woody plants and shrubs, where it plays a role in the local forest ecosystem.

Host plants: This pest is polyphagous and is known for damaging various berry-producing plants. It is particularly harmful to raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and wild forest berries like blueberries and lingonberries. It can also be found on deciduous trees such as willows and birches, which act as secondary hosts for the population.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. One of the most notable features of this species is maternal care, as females stay near their eggs and young nymphs to protect them from predators. The insect completes one generation per year, and adults overwinter in leaf litter or beneath tree bark to survive the cold months.

Nature of damage: Both nymphs and adults utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract plant sap. This feeding process results in deformed, stunted fruit, chlorotic spots on leaves, and premature fruit abscission. Beyond physical damage, the secretions introduced during feeding often ruin the taste and smell of the produce, rendering it commercially worthless and unpalatable.

Protection measures: Controlling this pest requires a combination of sanitation and strategic chemical application. Removing debris and weeds around planting areas is essential to reduce overwintering sites. In severe infestations, targeted application of broad-spectrum insecticides may be necessary; however, these should be timed to avoid peak blooming periods to protect pollinators like honeybees.

  • Regular monitoring of host plants for egg clusters.
  • Clearing surrounding brush to reduce migration from forests.
  • Manual removal of bugs during the early stages of the season.
  • Maintaining healthy plant vigor to improve resistance to pest stress.
