Primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, this thrips species has gained notoriety as a significant pest affecting a wide variety of ornamental plants, particularly those kept in greenhouses and indoor gardens worldwide.

The host range of Elixothrips brevisetis is diverse, with a strong preference for Ficus species, bananas, coffee plants, and various broad-leaved ornamentals. The insect typically colonizes the undersides of leaves, which allows it to remain unnoticed during the early stages of an infestation while causing cumulative damage to the plant tissue.

The life cycle of this pest includes egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs directly into the leaf tissue. Larvae emerging from these eggs feed on cell sap, leading to the characteristic yellowing and desiccation of the affected areas. The pupal stage may occur on the host plant or in the substrate, depending on specific species habits and environmental factors.

Damage caused by this thrips manifests as silver-gray patches, chlorosis, and stippling on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, leaves may become deformed, wither, or drop prematurely. The presence of black fecal spots further degrades the aesthetic quality of the plants, and the wound sites provide entry points for secondary pathogens and fungi.

Management strategies rely heavily on an integrated approach. Early detection via blue or yellow sticky traps is essential for timely intervention. When chemical control is necessary, systemic insecticides applied as sprays or soil drenches prove most effective against both larvae and adults. Cultural practices, such as increasing humidity and maintaining plant vigor, also play a critical role in preventing outbreaks.
