Belonging to the family Erebidae, this moth species is endemic to South American regions where coca cultivation is practiced. Because of its voracious larval stage, it is considered a major limiting factor in the sustainable production of these plants.

Systematically, this insect is categorized within the order Lepidoptera. While the adult moths are relatively inconspicuous, the larval stage is highly destructive. The caterpillars possess a robust digestive system, allowing them to process significant amounts of plant tissue, which results in rapid population growth and widespread infestations under favorable conditions.
