Common heath moth

The common heath moth (Ematurga atomaria) is a moth belonging to the family Geometridae and the order Lepidoptera. This insect is widely distributed across temperate regions and is commonly found in heathlands, moorlands, and open forest areas where its larval host plants thrive.

The larvae, or caterpillars, of this moth are primary defoliators of plants in the Ericaceae family. Their favorite food sources include heather (Calluna vulgaris), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), and marsh Labrador tea. Under high infestation pressure, they can also affect various ornamental shrubs planted in similar soil conditions.

The biological cycle of the common heath moth typically involves one or two generations annually. They overwinter as pupae buried in the soil or leaf litter. Adult moths emerge in the spring, and females proceed to lay eggs on the foliage of host plants. The larvae go through several developmental stages throughout the summer season.

The damage caused by the larvae is primarily focused on leaves and young shoots. By skeletonizing the foliage, they significantly impair the plant's ability to photosynthesize. Severe defoliation not only ruins the appearance of the plants but also creates physiological stress, making them susceptible to winter kill and opportunistic diseases.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. It is essential to inspect plantings during the early larval stages to determine if control measures are necessary. Mechanical removal is effective for small areas, while biological control agents or targeted insecticides can be used for larger infestations.
