Thread-legged bug
Empicoris rubromaculatus
Description
The thread-legged bug (Empicoris rubromaculatus) is a member of the assassin bug family (Reduviidae) within the order Hemiptera. While many assassin bugs are strictly beneficial predators, this particular species occupies a complex niche in agroecosystems, sometimes exhibiting opportunistic feeding behaviors on host plants under specific environmental conditions.
These insects are commonly found inhabiting greenhouse crops and various vegetable gardens. Their preferred host plants include tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. They thrive in environments that offer dense foliage for hunting and shelter, often appearing in commercial greenhouse operations where they can survive on both small arthropod prey and plant sap.
The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern (incomplete metamorphosis), consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs are highly mobile and start feeding shortly after hatching. The development rate is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity, which allows the species to potentially complete several generations per season in warm climates.
The primary damage caused by Empicoris rubromaculatus involves the extraction of plant fluids using their piercing-sucking mouthparts. This feeding activity leads to localized tissue necrosis, chlorosis, and general physiological stress in the host plants. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can significantly reduce marketable crop quality.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include maintaining clean cultivation practices to eliminate overwintering sites and using sticky yellow traps for population monitoring. When chemical intervention is necessary, growers should select selective insecticides that minimize impact on beneficial predatory insects, ensuring a sustainable balance in the ecosystem.
