Slender-billed parakeet

The slender-billed parakeet (Enicognathus leptorhynchus) belongs to the Psittacidae family and is widely recognized as a significant agricultural pest in its native range. Due to landscape modifications, these parrots have adapted to feed heavily on crops, posing a consistent challenge for commercial agriculture in Chile.

The species primarily affects grain crops, such as wheat, oats, and barley, as well as various orchards. When large flocks descend upon a field, they can consume and destroy a substantial percentage of the crop yield in a very short amount of time, making them a major concern for local producers during the harvest season.

Regarding their biology, these birds are highly social and exhibit strong flocking behavior. They rely on communal roosting and feeding patterns. The life cycle involves a dispersal phase after the breeding season, during which the newly formed flocks move across agricultural landscapes, targeting areas where crops are reaching maturity.

The damage caused by these parakeets is characterized by mechanical destruction and direct consumption. Beyond eating grains from the stalk, they often cause the stalks to break, resulting in lodged crops that are difficult to harvest. In orchards, they damage fruits, leaving them vulnerable to fungal infections and unsuitable for market distribution.

Effective protection measures include a variety of non-lethal deterrents. Farmers often employ automated acoustic devices that mimic the distress calls of predators or the alarm calls of the parrots themselves. Visual deterrents, such as reflective streamers and decoys, are also frequently used to discourage flocks from landing in the fields.

Sustainable pest management requires consistent monitoring of flock movements near agricultural zones. Integrating multiple deterrent strategies is essential to prevent the birds from habituating to a single method. Timely harvesting, where feasible, helps to reduce the window of vulnerability, significantly lowering potential losses caused by these persistent foragers.
