Enneothrips

Systematic position. Enneothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These are minute insects commonly referred to as thrips. They are recognized globally as significant pests in various agricultural settings, particularly in warm climatic zones where they can thrive and maintain stable populations year-round.

Host crops. The genus is primarily notorious for its impact on groundnut (peanut) crops. However, depending on the species and the regional environment, they may also infest various legumes and other horticultural crops. Their feeding habits allow them to adapt to different host plants, making them versatile and resilient pests in diverse agricultural ecosystems.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Enneothrips includes several distinct stages: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. The females oviposit their eggs directly into the leaf tissue. Due to their rapid development cycle, especially under favorable temperature and humidity conditions, they can produce multiple generations per season, leading to sudden population explosions.

Character of damage. Damage is caused by both larvae and adults using their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant cell sap. This activity results in characteristic silvering of leaves, leaf curling, and stunted growth. The damage to terminal buds can significantly delay plant development and reduce the overall photosynthetic capacity of the canopy, impacting final yields.

Control measures. Effective management requires a multifaceted strategy. Cultural practices, such as maintaining weed-free fields and proper crop rotation, are fundamental in reducing local infestations. Monitoring programs using yellow sticky traps are essential for early detection. When population thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of systemic insecticides or biological control agents are recommended to mitigate economic loss.
