Description
Systematic position. Enneothrips flavens belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect is a significant pest of legumes, specifically targeting the peanut crop, and is well-documented in agricultural research regarding its impact on crop production systems.
Affected crops and damage. The primary host plant is Arachis hypogaea (peanut). Both larvae and adults damage the plant by rasping and sucking sap from young foliage, buds, and terminal shoots. This feeding activity results in leaf curling, stunted growth, and necrosis, which impairs the plant's overall development.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg stage, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult stage. The female oviposits into the tender leaf tissues. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season when environmental conditions are optimal.
