Ennomos moth

The Ennomos moth (Ennomos) is a genus of moths belonging to the Geometridae family. These insects are widely recognized due to their unique caterpillar movement, characterized by a looping gait. In agricultural and forestry contexts, several species within this genus are considered significant pests due to their defoliating activities on broad-leaved trees.

These pests primarily target a variety of woody plants, including orchard trees like apple and pear, as well as deciduous forest trees such as oak, elm, birch, and poplar. The larvae are voracious feeders, and their presence can lead to severe structural and physiological issues for the host plants if infestations are left unchecked.

The biological cycle of the Ennomos typically consists of one generation per year. The overwintering stage usually occurs in the egg phase, deposited on the bark of trunks or twigs. Hatching coincides with the spring budburst, allowing the larvae to immediately begin feeding on the fresh, succulent foliage during their developmental stages.

Damage occurs when larvae consume leaf tissue, often starting from the edges and moving inward, eventually leaving behind only the primary veins. Severe defoliation reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, which directly negatively impacts fruit quality, vigor, and overall plant health, potentially leaving trees susceptible to secondary pathogens.

Effective management and control strategies include:

• Regular monitoring of tree canopies for the presence of larvae in early spring.
• Application of selective insecticides during the early larval instar stages when they are most vulnerable.
• Implementation of cultural practices such as pruning and removing heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as birds and parasitic wasps, which contribute to biological population suppression.
