Description
Systematic position: The notch-wing moth (Ennomos magnaria) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. This moth is a well-known member of the Geometer family, recognized for the unique locomotion of its larvae, which move by arching their bodies in a distinct loop-like motion.
Host plants: This pest primarily targets a variety of broadleaf trees. Its preferred hosts include maple, linden, birch, elm, and occasionally fruit-bearing trees found in residential orchards or forestry plots. It thrives in environments where these specific host trees are abundant.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Ennomos magnaria follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are nocturnal moths with ochre-colored wings marked with wavy patterns. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, attached to the bark of host trees, with larvae hatching in early spring to coincide with the flush of new foliage.
Damage and economic impact: Larvae are voracious leaf feeders. Early stages cause minor leaf perforation, but as they mature, they can skeletonize leaves or consume them entirely, leaving only midribs. Severe infestations result in significant canopy thinning, which reduces the tree’s photosynthetic capacity, weakens its vigor, and increases susceptibility to opportunistic diseases.
Control measures: Effective management strategies involve regular scouting and monitoring of egg clusters on tree trunks during the dormant season. During the larval stage, the application of biological controls, such as Bacillus thuringiensis sprays, provides a targeted approach. In extreme cases, systemic or contact insecticides may be applied to prevent widespread defoliation.
