Ennya

Ennya is a genus of insects belonging to the Membracidae family, order Hemiptera. These insects are distinguished from other entomofauna by the bizarre shape of their pronotum, which often features horn-like or crest-like projections. Adult individuals are typically small in size, but their mimicry allows them to camouflage effectively on the bark and branches of host plants.

The host range primarily includes woody shrubs and trees. Ennya is most frequently found on fruit trees, such as apples and pears, as well as on various ornamental species. These insects prefer young shoots and branches, where they can feed on plant sap without hindrance throughout the entire growing season.

The biology of this species is typical for treehoppers. Females deposit their eggs beneath the bark or into the tissues of young shoots using a specialized ovipositor. Larval development proceeds through several instars, during which they actively feed on plant sap. The life cycle is closely linked to regional climatic conditions, with the possibility of two generations per season in warmer areas.

The pest causes damage to plants in two primary ways. First, sap extraction inhibits shoot growth and can lead to foliage deformation. Second, the damage caused to the bark during egg-laying compromises the integrity of plant tissues, creating entry points for pathogenic fungi and bacteria, which often leads to the development of necroses and the dieback of individual branches.
