Four-spotted clerid beetle

Systematic position. The four-spotted clerid beetle (Enoclerus quadrisignatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cleridae. While many members of this family are known as predators, some species, including this one, are closely linked to forest ecosystems and can be associated with damage to trees, acting as secondary pests or co-inhabitants of infested wood.

Host plants. This species primarily infests a variety of coniferous and deciduous tree species. It is frequently observed under the bark or within galleries created by wood-boring insects such as bark beetles and longhorn beetles. In agroforestry settings, it can be problematic by contributing to the decline of stressed trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are most active during the spring and summer months. Females lay eggs in crevices of the bark or inside the existing galleries of other wood-boring insects. The larvae develop within the wood, which provides them with shelter and a food source, often interacting with other wood-inhabiting organisms.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage caused by this insect involves both direct mechanical impact on tree tissues and indirect harm by creating entry points for wood-decaying fungi and bacteria. In cases of high infestation density, Enoclerus quadrisignatus can significantly weaken the host tree, making it susceptible to pathogens and environmental stress factors.

Control measures. Protecting trees from this pest requires an integrated approach focusing on forest hygiene and preventative maintenance:

• removal and proper disposal of infested or deadwood to limit breeding sites;
• regular monitoring of beetle populations using pheromone traps;
• improving tree vigor through proper silvicultural management;
• selective application of insecticides in high-risk areas;
• fostering a balanced ecosystem that supports natural predators of wood-boring insects.
