Mustard beetle

The mustard beetle (Entomoscelis adonidis) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae), order Coleoptera. This agricultural pest is highly specialized, primarily targeting crops within the Brassicaceae family. It is recognized globally as a significant threat to the cultivation of oilseed rape, mustard, and various leafy vegetables.

This beetle thrives on cruciferous plants, causing significant economic damage to both winter and spring crops. The pest's distribution is closely tied to the presence of host crops and wild cruciferous weeds, which provide essential resources for the insect throughout its life cycle. Monitoring fields during the early stages of plant development is crucial for successful management.

The biology of Entomoscelis is characterized by a univoltine life cycle, meaning it produces one generation per year. Adult beetles overwinter in the upper soil layers or beneath dense plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on available foliage, mate, and deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants. The larvae subsequently feed on the leaves before pupating in the ground.

Damage caused by the mustard beetle manifests as irregular holes or full skeletonization of leaves, as both larvae and adults consume plant tissue. Heavy infestations can lead to total loss of seedling stands, resulting in sparse crop density and reduced photosynthetic surface area. This stress significantly compromises the plant's vigor, making it susceptible to environmental factors.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach (IPM). Cultural practices such as crop rotation and deep tillage are fundamental to reducing overwintering populations. Chemical control should be implemented when the population exceeds the economic threshold, utilizing recommended insecticides with varied modes of action to prevent resistance development.
