The yellow spider mite (genus Eotetranychus) is a significant pest within the Tetranychidae family, known for its ability to infest a wide variety of horticultural and agricultural crops. These arachnids are highly adapted to feeding on plant sap, utilizing specialized mouthparts to puncture leaf tissues and extract essential nutrients.

Common host plants include various deciduous trees, shrubs, grapevines, and several ornamental species. By colonizing the underside of leaves, these mites can remain hidden from casual inspection until significant damage to the plant's photosynthetic system has already occurred, leading to stunted development and reduced yields.

The life cycle of Eotetranychus is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly heat and low humidity, which accelerate their development from egg to adult. In optimal summer conditions, the pest can complete multiple generations in a single season, quickly reaching population levels that cause severe economic damage.

Damage symptoms typically begin as chlorotic stippling on the leaves, which gradually turns yellow or bronze. As the infestation progresses, the mites produce fine silk webbing that spans the leaf surfaces. Severe defoliation and weakened plant health are common consequences, especially in water-stressed or environmentally pressured crops.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes both cultural and chemical control methods. While acaricides remain a primary tool for rapid population reduction, integrated pest management (IPM) practices—such as monitoring and the introduction of predatory mites like Phytoseiulus persimilis—are essential for long-term control and resistance management.
