Eotetranychus boreus mite

Systematic position. Eotetranychus boreus belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae (spider mites). These are small, plant-feeding mites characterized by their ability to spin delicate silk webs on the underside of leaves, which serves as protection and a movement corridor.

Host plants. This species is known as a pest of various trees and shrubs. It primarily infests deciduous fruit trees, including pome fruits like apples and pears, as well as some stone fruit species. They are often found in both commercial orchards and natural forest ecosystems.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The development rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature, with multiple generations possible during a single growing season. In autumn, fertilized females migrate to overwintering sites, such as bark crevices or dry foliage, where they remain until the following spring.

Damage and economic significance. Feeding occurs through piercing the leaf tissue with mouthparts and extracting cellular sap. Initial signs include chlorotic spots (stippling) on the leaves. Severe infestations lead to leaf senescence, canopy thinning, and reduced photosynthetic efficiency, which directly impacts fruit size, quality, and the tree's overall vigor for the next season.

Management strategies. Effective control requires a combination of monitoring and chemical or biological intervention.
