Web mite Eotetranychus clitus

Systematic position. Eotetranychus clitus is a member of the Trombidiformes order and the Tetranychidae family, commonly known as spider mites. This mite is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in environments where host plants are available throughout the growing season.

Host plants. This species primarily affects a variety of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. It is frequently observed causing damage to fruit-bearing crops and various ornamental plants, where it colonizes leaves to feed on plant juices, leading to a decline in the physiological health of the host.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle of Eotetranychus clitus consists of egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and the adult phase. Reproduction is temperature-dependent; high temperatures and low humidity accelerate the generation time, allowing populations to reach critical levels very quickly. Adult females hibernate in bark crevices or litter during winter months.

Damage and pest status. The pest feeds on the underside of leaves, where it weaves a fine, barely visible web. As a result of the feeding process, the leaf tissue begins to lose chlorophyll, showing characteristic stippling or bronzing. Severe infestations lead to leaf senescence and premature abscission, which negatively affects the plant's overall growth and yield potential.

Control measures. Protecting plants against Eotetranychus clitus requires a well-integrated approach to keep populations below economic thresholds:

• Regular inspection of the lower leaf surfaces for early detection of mite activity.
• Strategic application of selective acaricides during peak infestation periods.
• Implementation of good horticultural practices, such as maintaining proper plant hydration to reduce stress.
