Pecan leaf scorch mite

The Pecan leaf scorch mite (Eotetranychus hicoriae) is a member of the Tetranychidae family, widely known in agricultural circles as a significant pest of nut-bearing trees. This mite is specifically adapted to feed on the foliage of hickory and pecan species, often causing substantial leaf drop in late summer.

These mites primarily inhabit the undersides of leaves, forming small colonies along the leaf veins. Because of their minute size, they are often overlooked until the damage becomes obvious. Their life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing them to complete multiple generations within a single growing season, particularly during hot and dry weather conditions.

The biology of Eotetranychus hicoriae involves a rapid transition through egg, larva, and nymph stages. Females deposit eggs directly onto the leaf tissue. As the population density grows, they spin fine silk webbing across the leaf surface, which provides protection for the colony and serves as a medium for movement across the tree canopy.

The damage caused by these mites is characterized by a distinctive "scorched" appearance of the leaves. As they pierce the leaf cells to feed, they extract chlorophyll, leading to yellowing, bronzing, and eventually necrosis of the leaf blades. Significant infestations force trees into premature dormancy, resulting in reduced nut filling, lower yields, and weakened overall tree health.
