Citrus yellow mite

The citrus yellow mite (Eotetranychus kankitus) is a destructive plant-feeding pest belonging to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tetranychidae. Known for its impact on subtropical agriculture, this mite species specializes in colonizing citrus trees, causing significant physiological stress to the host plants.

The primary hosts of this pest include various citrus species such as oranges, lemons, mandarins, and grapefruits. By feeding on the sap of these plants, the mite reduces the tree's vigor, which directly leads to stunted growth, fruit quality degradation, and significant yield losses in commercial citrus orchards.

The biological cycle of the citrus yellow mite is characterized by a rapid development rate under warm conditions. The lifecycle stages comprise egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Due to this high reproductive capacity, populations can explode within a short period, moving from overwintering sites on bark crevices to fresh, succulent leaves during the spring.

Symptoms of infestation typically appear as small chlorotic spots on the leaf surface, which eventually coalesce as the population density increases. Heavily infested leaves become yellow, brittle, and may undergo premature abscission. In severe cases, the characteristic fine webbing produced by the mites can cover leaves and small branches.

Managing the citrus yellow mite requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to be successful over the long term:

• Regular field scouting to monitor pest density levels.
• Application of selective acaricides when economic threshold levels are reached.
• Rotating chemicals with different modes of action to manage resistance.
• Encouraging natural predators such as predatory mites and ladybugs to suppress population growth.
• Maintaining optimal irrigation to prevent plant stress, which makes trees more susceptible to damage.
