Systematic position: Eotetranychus lewisi, commonly known as the Lewis spider mite, belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and family Tetranychidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to thrive in various environments and cause economic damage to specific fruit and ornamental plants.

Host plants: The primary hosts of this mite are citrus trees, particularly lemons and oranges. However, its host range is extensive and includes crops like papaya, grapes, poinsettia, and various ornamental plants, making it a persistent threat in both field and greenhouse settings.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the Lewis spider mite consists of the egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and the adult. Development is highly temperature-dependent, with warm conditions accelerating the generation time to as little as two weeks. Females deposit eggs primarily on the underside of leaves, often near the veins, where they are protected from environmental fluctuations.

Nature of damage and pest status: Damage occurs when mites pierce plant cells with their mouthparts to feed on chlorophyll-rich sap. This leads to chlorotic stippling, leaf bronzing, and eventual leaf drop. High infestation levels are characterized by heavy webbing, which can cover entire leaves and shoots, significantly reducing the photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor of the host plant.
