Description
Eotetranychus mandensis is a species of spider mite belonging to the family Tetranychidae (order Trombidiformes). This microscopic pest is a significant threat to various agricultural crops, causing physiological stress to host plants by feeding on intracellular fluids through specialized mouthparts.
The mite primarily infests fruit trees, berry bushes, and several ornamental species. It characteristically colonizes the undersides of leaves, constructing fine, silken webbing. This structure provides a microenvironment that protects the mites from environmental extremes and makes it difficult for contact pesticides to reach the target pests.
The developmental cycle of this mite includes the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Its reproductive rate is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity. Under optimal warm and dry conditions, the mite can produce numerous overlapping generations in a single growing season, leading to rapid population spikes.
Infestation damage initially appears as chlorotic stippling or a mottled appearance on leaves. Over time, these spots coalesce into large necrotic areas. As the damage progresses, leaves often curl and drop prematurely, which significantly reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, weakens its growth, and severely compromises fruit yield and quality.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key tactics include the timely application of specific acaricides, monitoring population densities, and promoting natural predators such as predatory mites and ladybeetles. Cultural practices, such as maintaining appropriate irrigation and controlling host weeds, are also essential to limit pest outbreaks.
