Pale spider mite

Systematic position: The pale spider mite (Eotetranychus pallidus) is classified within the order Acariformes and the family Tetranychidae. These mites are microscopic pests that thrive in warm and dry environments, often remaining unnoticed until significant damage appears on the host plant.

Host plants: This species is a polyphagous pest with a preference for woody perennials. It is particularly problematic in fruit orchards, commonly infesting apples, pears, and various stone fruits. Additionally, it is frequently recorded on vineyards, where it can compromise the overall health and yield of the grapevines.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under favorable warm weather, the mite reproduces rapidly, completing multiple generations in a single season. Adult females usually overwinter in sheltered spots such as bark crevices, ready to emerge as soon as temperatures rise in spring.

Damage and economic impact: Damage is caused by the mite feeding on the plant cells on the underside of leaves. This feeding process results in characteristic stippling, chlorosis, and eventual browning of the leaves. Severe infestations lead to premature defoliation, weakened tree vitality, and reduced quality and quantity of the harvest.

Control measures: Management involves a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and pruning helps plants tolerate infestations. When thresholds are reached, targeted acaricides should be used. Rotating chemical classes is essential to manage resistance, as these mites can develop tolerance to repeated applications.
