Suginami spider mite

The Suginami spider mite (Eotetranychus suginamensis) is a destructive pest belonging to the Tetranychidae family and the order Trombidiformes. These mites are known for their ability to colonize foliage, which significantly reduces the vigor and productivity of various woody plant species.

The host range of Eotetranychus suginamensis includes various fruit trees and viticulture crops. By feeding on the cellular contents of leaves, the mite disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, often leading to reduced fruit quality and yield losses in commercial orchards.

The life cycle follows a standard progression: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The rate of development is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly temperature and humidity. Dry and hot conditions accelerate the reproductive cycle, allowing for multiple generations per season.

Damage typically manifests as chlorosis, where leaves show tiny yellow dots at the feeding sites. As the infestation progresses, leaves may turn bronze, wither, and drop prematurely. The presence of fine webbing on the abaxial leaf surface is a key indicator that the mite population has reached a critical level.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining healthy, well-watered plants and removing infested debris are essential. Chemical control involves the application of specialized acaricides, ensuring rotation of chemical classes to prevent the development of resistance. Biological control via predatory mites is also a recommended strategy in sustainable systems.
