Description

The lime spider mite (Eotetranychus tiliarium) belongs to the family Tetranychidae within the order Acariformes. This microscopic pest is widely recognized as a major threat to lime trees (Tilia spp.), causing severe damage to foliage and weakening the overall health of the host plant.

The mite primarily targets the leaves of lime trees. By piercing the leaf cells and feeding on the sap, the mites disrupt the physiological processes of the tree. While lime trees are their primary host, under favorable conditions, the pest can impact various other deciduous species in temperate forests and urban gardens.

The life cycle of the lime spider mite is closely tied to seasonal temperature changes. Overwintering occurs in the adult female stage, typically hidden in bark crevices or plant debris. As soon as temperatures rise in the spring, the mites become active, migrating to the newly developing buds and leaves to begin their rapid reproductive cycle.

Damage symptoms usually appear as small chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, giving the foliage a bleached or mottled appearance. Heavy infestations often result in premature leaf drop and the formation of visible, delicate silk webbing on the underside of the leaves, where the colony resides.

Chemical control involves the application of specialized acaricides, ensuring thorough coverage of the leaf undersides. Additionally, maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management helps plants withstand and recover from mite pressure more successfully.
