Description
The Hooked spider mite (Eotetranychus uncatus) is a member of the Tetranychidae family, widely recognized as a significant pest in pomology. This mite species feeds on the cellular contents of leaves, causing physiological stress to the host plants during the growing season.
The primary host plants for this mite include various fruit-bearing species such as apple and pear trees, as well as several deciduous trees like lime and beech. The pest colonizes the abaxial side of the leaves, where it constructs a fine web, providing protection and a controlled microclimate for its population.
The biological cycle begins in the spring when overwintered females emerge from under the bark of host trees. Over the course of the growing season, multiple generations develop, with population growth accelerating during periods of hot, dry weather. High temperatures significantly shorten the developmental time from egg to adult.
Damage caused by the mite is characterized by the appearance of pale spots on leaves, which gradually coalesce. As the infestation progresses, the foliage loses its green color, exhibits chlorosis, and eventually dries out or sheds prematurely. This damage impedes photosynthesis, directly affecting the tree's health, fruit yield, and quality.
